In a way-no, I do not teach Social Studies nor do I desire to teach fifth graders. I teach middle school level students. So I think I had a bias when the group chose this particular section to cover. I am open minded and try to learn something new all of the time.

There was a lot to learn from this course and I felt I did. The CAST book builder exercise and lesson plan builder really opened my eyes. I was really impressed by the book builder. I will definitely pass this information on to the Language Arts department. Hopefully, we may be able to do a joint project one day.

    1. What outcomes had you envisioned for this course? Did you achieve those outcomes? Did the actual course outcomes align with those that you envisioned?
I’m not sure what I envisioned for this course. I know that there is so much more out there that what I cover in classes and looked forward to being enlightened. I can say that I was. I was able to learn a great deal about Google docs and other applications just through this course. I’ve briefly covered it in a workshop, but nothing in depth like this and we only scratched the surface.
    2. To the extent that you achived the outcomes, are they still relevant to the work that you do in your school? Why or why not?
In a way-no, I do not teach Social Studies nor do I desire to teach fifth graders. I teach middle school level students. So I think I had a bias when the group chose this particular section to cover. I am open minded and try to learn something new all of the time.
    3. What outcomes did you not achieve? What prevented you from achieving them?
One of the outcomes we didn’t achieve was an online group chat/meeting. I had connection problems and was there only part of the time, but others did not show. But even so, through e-mails and postings on our group site, we were able to complete the work.
    4. Were you successful in completing the course assignments? If not, what prevented or discouraged you?
I was successful in completing most of the assignments. Week two proved to be rough as I didn’t understand what to do. Once I took a breath and a step back, I was able to re-group my thinking process and complete the other assignments.
    5. What did you learn from this course: about yourself, your technology and leadership skills, and your attitudes?
There was a lot to learn from this course and I felt I did. The CAST book builder exercise and lesson plan builder really opened my eyes. I was really impressed by the book builder. I will definitely pass this information on to the Language Arts department. Hopefully, we may be able to do a joint project one day.

Week 5 was a time of collaboration and meeting of the minds. I honestly was confused on the major assignment especially since it was out of my comfor zone. However, I adjusted and rose to the occassion. My group had an online chat and it really cleared some things up. I was also able to learn about the various ways technology can be integrated. The biggest challenge for me, being the "technology" teacher,is I had to switch my train of thought to intergrating technology instead of teaching it.

This week we covered using technology with students and team work. As a teacher, you need to see what resources and time limits you have. I teach middle school, so most are socially engaged in form or another during class anyway. The key is to get them out of their comfort groups as much as they will rebel. I sometimes use a random group generator or put them in group of four, letting two people pick a friend.
In my discussion board post, I addressed how time is my enemy. Cramming a year long course into a semester is very challenging. We can't spend too much time on something, plus interruptions for pep rallies, assemblies among other things is another major hurdle.

I thought I understood UDL, but after looking at week 3's assignment, I don't think I am getting it. I will be honest in that I specifically chose NOT to teach elementary for a reason. In regards to this week's readings and videos, I was quite impressed with 11 year old Cameron and his imagination. The other technoglogy teacher and myself were just discussing the other day what more can we do to expand our student's technology knowledge base and meet their needs in the semester time period given.

This week's assignment focused on how technology can be used for students with a variety of learning styles. From G/T to life skills, there is a technology format or lesson for all. I learned about UDL, which was enlightening. I'm also ready to use blogging and wikis in my assignments. My district's tech coordinator is really on a crusade to bring every available tech gadget, idea, or lesson to all students.
